Rich Wilde and the Tome of Insanity: Game Overview

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Insanity is a Play'n GO slot released on May 5, 2024. It is a direct sequel to Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness (2019) and is set in a Gothic library steeped in H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. The game runs on a 5×5 grid with no fixed paylines. Wins form when four or more matching symbols connect horizontally or vertically — a Cluster Pays system. Every winning cluster triggers a Tumble (Cascade), removing winning symbols and dropping new ones into their place. This process repeats until no new clusters form.

Gameplay and Betting

Bets range from €0.10 to €100 per spin, covering a wide range of stake levels. Each spin drops 25 symbols onto the 5×5 grid. A cluster of four or more matching symbols pays out and is then removed, with remaining and new symbols falling to fill the gaps. Cascades continue as long as new winning clusters form. Every symbol involved in a winning cluster charges the Portal Meter by +1.

Symbols

The paytable includes eight regular pay symbols split into two groups:

  • Low-value symbols: Four coloured gemstones (runes). A cluster of four pays 0.1× to 0.4× the bet; clusters of 10+ pay up to 3× the bet.
  • High-value symbols: Potion bottle, severed tentacle, pocket watch, and cyclopean skull. The skull is the top-paying regular symbol, awarding 100× the bet for a cluster of 10 or more.

Three Wild types are present in the game:

  • Book Wild: Substitutes for all pay symbols and, when part of a winning cluster, triggers a Portal modifier effect.
  • Multiplier Wild (Rich Wilde): Substitutes for all pay symbols and applies a multiplier of ×2, ×3, ×4, or ×5 in the base game. In the Damnation Free Spin, multiplier values increase to ×2, ×3, ×5, or ×10. When multiple Multiplier Wilds appear in the same cluster, only the highest value applies.
  • Yog-Sothoth Wild: A 2×2 oversized wild that walks three times across the grid during the bonus round. Its value is multiplied by any active Multiplier Wild.

Portal Meter and Modifiers

The Portal Meter is the central progression mechanic. Each symbol in a winning cluster adds one charge. Four milestone thresholds unlock different effects:

  • Ruin (8 charges): Awards 2–4 Book Wilds on the grid.
  • Harvest (16 charges): Awards 2–4 Book Wilds; winning clusters formed with these Wilds destroy surrounding symbols.
  • Abomination (30 charges): Awards 2–4 Book Wilds; winning clusters formed with these Wilds upgrade low-value gem symbols to premium ritual item symbols.
  • Damnation (48 charges): Triggers the Damnation Free Spin bonus round.

All-Seeing Eye

During any spin, an All-Seeing Eye may appear on a random grid position. If a winning cluster forms on that position, 2–4 Book Wilds are placed randomly on the grid. In the Damnation Free Spin, the mini-grid fills with up to 12 regular eyes and 6 special eyes. Opening all regular eyes summons the Yog-Sothoth Wild; opening the special eyes in addition applies a multiplier of up to ×4 to that Wild.

Damnation Free Spin (Bonus Round)

The bonus round triggers when the Portal Meter reaches 48 charges within a single cascading sequence. Players enter the Damnation Free Spin with a guaranteed minimum of 3 Portal modifiers in reserve. The round continues as long as Portal modifiers remain; a modifier activates on each non-winning spin or cascade. If the meter is overcharged beyond 48 symbols, one additional Portal modifier is awarded for every 4 extra charges, up to a maximum of 7 modifiers total. There is no Bonus Buy feature in this game.
