Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness – Game Overview

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness is a Play'n GO slot released on June 27, 2019. It is set within H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos and features a 5x5 cascading cluster pays grid. Wins form when four or more matching symbols connect horizontally or vertically. The maximum win is 2,000x the bet, and bets range from €0.10 to €100 per spin. Gameplay and Grid Mechanics

The game operates on a 5x5 grid with no fixed paylines. Cluster Pays mechanics require a minimum of four matching symbols to connect in any horizontal or vertical direction. When a winning cluster lands, those symbols are removed and new ones drop in from above — a Tumble (cascade) mechanic that can generate multiple wins from a single paid spin.

Every winning cluster charges the Portal Meter, located on the left side of the grid. A losing spin or cascade resets the meter. The Portal Meter has four charge thresholds that unlock escalating features:

  • 7 symbols collected: Two Special Wilds are added to the grid.
  • 14 symbols collected: Two Special Wilds are added, and the Abyss Portal Effect activates on any subsequent winning combination.
  • 27 symbols collected: Two Special Wilds are added, and the Void Portal Effect activates — a random symbol type is selected and all matching symbols are removed from the grid, allowing new symbols to drop in.
  • 42 symbols collected: The Other World Free Round is triggered.

Symbols

The paytable contains four high-value and four low-value regular symbols themed around Lovecraftian iconography. Three wild types are present on the grid:

  • Special Wild (Necronomicon / Book of Madness): Substitutes for all regular pay symbols and generates additional Portal charge energy, accelerating progress toward bonus features.
  • Multiplier Wild (Rich Wilde): Substitutes for all high-pay symbols and applies a 2x multiplier to any win it completes. The multiplier only applies when Rich Wilde is part of the winning cluster.
  • Mega Wild (Cthulhu): A 2x2 oversized wild symbol that appears exclusively during the Other World Free Round. It is placed at the top of the grid and moves one row downward with each cascade, remaining active until it exits the bottom of the grid.

Other World Free Round (Bonus Feature)

The Other World Free Round is a single extended free spin triggered when the Portal Meter reaches 42 collected symbols. For every three additional symbols won beyond the 42 threshold, one extra Portal Effect is added, up to a maximum of seven Portal Effects.

During the round, 11 or 12 Eye Marks appear on the grid. Forming a winning cluster over an Eye Mark opens that eye. If all Eye Marks are opened, the Mega Wild Cthulhu symbol is released onto the grid. The round continues until all Portal Effects have been used. There is no standard free spins count — the round's duration depends entirely on cascade performance and Portal Effect usage.
